Sharmazanov on banning journalists’ entry to City Council session hall: ‘If they take Parliament’s path, it will be far more effective’

February 22,2018 15:40

Today, after the session of the Republican Party of Armenia’s Supreme Body, RPA spokesman, Eduard Sharmazanov was asked about the intention of holding so-called closed sessions of the Council of Elders at Yerevan Municipality.

Let us remind you that the Mayor aims to ban journalists’ entry into the session hall, however, an opportunity for online broadcast will be given. Until the present moment, they have already decided that after the election of the PM the journalists will be restricted to follow the governments’ sessions.

Sharmazanov referred to this: “It is the same way in the Parliament. Is it bad? What issue is in place?  Do you see any issue relative to our work in the Parliament? You come and tape from the hall the first 15 minutes and then you go and politely do your job there. A live broadcast is permitted. What is the journalists’ task? Their task is to transmit the information to the public. It is a live broadcast. After that, it is your issue what interview to take from which political actor. It is not that our people’s right to receiving information is taken. I speak by the example of the Parliament. I do not know what decision they will make in the Municipality. But if they really decide on taking the Parliament’s path, it will be very effective. I have not heard from any journalist that the live broadcast has evoked any issue or inconvenience to any of them. The opposite, the journalists take interviews both in the corridors and the office rooms. I do not see a problem here.”
