“Atom Egoyan made rather transparent remarks. The first one was why is everybody surprised now that Serzh Sargsyan has already become Prime Minister if you had that coming one year ago? Second, why did not you organize rallies at that time?” said political scientist Stepan Safaryan in his interview to Aravot.am, referring to famous Canadian-Armenian artist Atom Egoyan’s reaction to Nikol Pashinyan’s urge to join the movement.
“There is an assessment that the movement has been late, and also some kind of dilemma about why is something being done now if it could have been done a year before,” mentions our interlocutor.
Stepan Safaryan imagines the shock of the famous Armenian persons a year ago when the process of elections was discussed in Armenia. “People having lived in democratic countries witnessed how people were brought in groups, they said the votes have been massively bought…and it must have been more than disappointing that no complaints by any political power or the society followed that. As a matter of fact, political powers took it for granted and accepted the situation as it was,” said Safaryan.
Addressing the ongoing demonstrations in the streets of Yerevan, our interlocutor said that time will show what developments and terms the movement brings. He considers it important that the revolt and willingness of the young people turn to political capital.
