Turkish Radio and Television Corporation known as TRT has broadcasted the leader of nationalist “Vatan” (“Fatherland”) party, Dogu Perincek, within the frameworks of the parliamentary and presidential election campaign. The elections are going to take place on June 24 of the current year. Perincek is famous for his Armenophobic announcements and activities.
Perincek, nominated as a presidential candidate by the party, has spoken about the achievements of the party, the economic problems of Turkey and the external political challenges. Referring to the activities of him and his party against the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, Perincek has said: “We demolished the lie named Armenian Genocide. We challenged Turkey’s enemies in Europe, saying that they could not call us genociders, they could not make us kneel. We made them kneel and won 3 court cases in the European Court of Human Rights in a row.”
Let us remind you that Perincek was subjected to financial and criminal punishment by the Swiss courts for denying the Armenian Genocide in 2007. In 2013 Perincek appealed against that decision in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The ECHR issued a verdict in support of Perincek, mentioning that Switzerland had violated the right of the Turkish political actor to freedom of speech. The Swiss side applied to the ECHR with the request of revision of Perincek’s case by the Grand Chamber. On October 15, 2015, the Grand Chamber of the ECHR decided that Switzerland had violated Perincek’s right to freedom of speech by 10 for and 7 against votes.
