“I do not think that the reelection of Recep Tayyip Erdogan as Turkish President will have a positive effect on Armenian-Turkish relations, especially if we pay attention to the election results”, in an interview with “Aravot”, said Turkologist Taron Hovhannisyan, referring to the presidential and parliamentary elections held in Turkey on June 24.
He stressed: “Justice and Development” party, led by Erdogan, failed to secure a majority on its own. It happened in an alliance with the “Nationalist Movement” party. The “Nationalist Movement” is the party that unites Turkey’s most nationalist electorate, and while making decisions it will have to take into consideration these sections of the society, who are not a minority in Turkey. Besides there are nationalist-Islamic-masses that support Erdogan as well: naturally, such a president will not pursue a pro-Armenian policy. I do not think there will be positive developments in this respect, neither in relations with Armenia nor regarding the Armenian community in Turkey”.
