Mainly situational solutions in Armenia’s foreign policy: ‘Zhamanak’

July 21,2018 16:39

Armenian foreign policy mainly deals with situational solutions. According to political analyst Aghasi Yenokyan, Armenia needs a foreign policy doctrine:

“Something similar has been outlined and was noted that our foreign policy preferences have not changed. But that does not mean that we had a foreign policy doctrine before. We try to remain within the borders of our old mentality of security”, noted Yenokyan and added: “At the same time, a democratic revolution took place in Armenia, which, whether you want or not, requires a change in those preferences. Because totalitarian regimes have their ideas about their security and foreign policy, democratic regimes have theirs”.

According to Yenokyan, there are situational solutions in the foreign policy of Armenia. The problem is that the new democratic government has an aspiration to seek closer relations with the West, at the same time it tries not to cooperate with Russia but rather not to irritate it. “Not irritating is not a political category, and this results in many consequences: starting from not recognizing Armenians’ driving licenses, up to the military exercises near Panik village”, said Yenokyan and noted that Armenia responds to any incident according to the situation. “Reactionary response to the incident, based on the situation”.
