“Former politicians who have seized power must be held politically accountable. Nikol Pashinyan does not manage to form political allies who would give political assessment of previous years”, referring to the case of Armenian second President Robert Kocharyan, who was arrested on charges of overthrowing the constitutional order of the Republic of Armenia on March 1, 2008, said Azat Arshakyan, a former deputy of the Supreme Council.
“Former politicians not only had political programs but also acted in the criminal-oligarchic system. Indeed, whatever is being carried out against Robert Kocharyan now, is political”, he assured. According to Azat Arshakyan, if the former president is detained, it is a political process and political accusation. However, criminal aspects may also exist in the case, which should be found out by the law enforcement bodies”.
As for the reactions of the Armenian and Artsakh political structures over Robert Kocharyan’s detention, Azat Arshakyan believes those are not directly addressed to Kocharyan: “Those are an attempt to respect the presumption of innocence. Those who say “change the preventive measure”, do not support him in that way. The problem is that the institute of detention is being abused in our country”.
Former MP thinks Robert Kocharyan would help law enforcement officers to reveal the insiders if he was not detained: “If he was not detained, he would have made some gatherings. I think he is testifying on them now as well. He is indicted for a serious crime. Let the law enforcement bodies reveal the case”.
