Former President of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan gave an interview to Yerkir Media TV.
To the question, whether he returns to politics, ex-president replied: “Consider I have come back, definitely.”
To the observation that Armenia has dignified posture, Kocharyan responded: “What is that dignity? You are responsible for the security of Armenian people, for territorial integrity and for Karabakh. You put your false commentary on one scale, while on the other scale you put the security of your people, the future of Karabakh – the land that is under our army’s control. I do not accept that, that is why I return to politics. Eventually, there is power and it has its approaches, but nobody deprived me and others of having a different opinion. Shouldn’t we have a different opinion?”
To the question why he decided to return to politics, Robert Kocharyan answered: “I am not sure that Armenia’s current government has enough experience and deep knowledge. These danger and threats are the first driving force for me today to return to politics.”
Will he return as an individual or will he form a political force?
“The return can be in different formats. One of the main reasons for my return is the dangers that I see. Look at the map, where is Armenia and with what countries it is surrounded? We have a government which does not understand all this, does not have an experience, I do not blame. The government does not understand that one cannot discredit the army, that the only guarantor of our statehood in this situation is solely our powerful army. The balance that Armenia has found is shattering. They do not evaluate adequately what is happening outside Armenia. They do not have experience. From where should they gain the experience if they were busy with Soros’s grants. They try to discredit the army, the people who have a serious role in the defense of their homeland. These are irresponsible steps.”
On July 26, 2018, second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan was charged with a criminal offense on the basis of sufficient evidence obtained during the preliminary investigation by the Armenian Special Investigative Service on the criminal case on the events that took place in Yerevan from March 1, 2008 to March 2, 2008, under Article 300.1 Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia, for the fact that he overturned the constitutional order of the Republic of Armenia by prior agreement with other persons. On July 28, Kocharyan has been remanded into custody for two months. The Court of Criminal Appeals of the Republic of Armenia decided that President Robert Kocharyan should not remain in detention, and Kocharyan was released on April 13.
