Snap elections to the Yerevan Council of Elders will take place on September 23, the Central Electoral Commission of Armenia announced the decision today at the extraordinary session.
The Commission also set the timetable of main activities in the course of organization and holding the snap elections.
To note, the Civil Contract, Prosperous Armenia and Yerkir Tsirani parties have nominated Hayk Marutyan, Naira Zohrabyan and Zaruhi Postanjyan as their top candidates in the upcoming municipal elections, respectively.
Bright Armenia and Republic have fielded Justice Minister Artak Zeynalyan as their joint mayoral candidate in the elections.
The need for snap elections arose after former Mayor Taron Margaryan stepped down on 9 July amid strong public pressure. At a special session on July 16, the Council of Elders fell short of securing the necessary quorum to elect a new mayor.
