Possible for Robert Kocharyan to be elected if Nikol Pashinyan Resigns: Political Scientist

August 20,2018 16:38

“It isn’t necessary to make the prime minister’s political life more difficult and to create the possibility for a counter-revolution by placing a political suicide mechanism on the National Assembly. I think that the issue of dissolving the parliament needs to be solved through a referendum, which will be the only effective mechanism used to do that,” political scientist Hayk Martirosyan said in a meeting with journalists after expressing his opinion about Nikol Pashinyan’s thought that constitutional changes need to be put into place so that parliamentary elections don’t happen only after his resignation (the current law states that he must resign, and the National Assembly needs to not vote on a new Prime Minister twice, so that it would be possible to have new parliamentary elections).

As far as the prime minister’s fear that the parliament’s largest political force, the Republican Party, will vote for a new prime minister after his resignation, Hayk Martirosyan observed, “It’s clear who the new prime minister would be. I’m talking about Robert Kocharyan. If we, of course, allow for such thing to happen, the entire revolution would have been for nothing… the people can’t go out every day and start a revolution.”

Considering the situation that Nikol Pashinyan has 100,000 supporters, how could the Republican Party dare to nominate and elect a new prime minister? Hayk Martirosyan emphasized, “100,000 people, seeing that Robert Kocharyan will be the new Prime Minister, will react in the same way they did during the days of the revolution or they can not react at all. There is a possibility of disappointment. People will see that the revolutionary authorities made a fatal mistake. Besides that, during those elections for prime minister, there could be an increase in military activity at the border.”
