Angela Merkel followed Armenian Velvet Revolution

August 25,2018 14:34

Germany will do everything in its power to ensure that the process of giving Armenia visa liberalization in the European Union will go into effect as soon as possible. Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel announced this during a press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

An Armenian reporter asked about the visa regime between Armenia and the EU.

The prime minister of Nikol Pashinyan also said that he referred to that issue during negotiations with the chancellor. The leaders of both countries stated that, according to statistics, after the political changes that took place in Armenia recently, immigration to Armenia is taking place at a higher rate than emigration from Armenia. This means that the changes that took place in our country perhaps encourage repatriation, not emigration, the prime minister said. This also gives hope that the fears associated with changes in the visa regime will be neutralized.

The chancellor stated that Armenia and Germany have positive relations, added that they can be even better. She also positively spoke about the framework of the agreement to be signed between Armenia and the EU. She promised that Germany will have its input in making the agreement a reality. She said that she is also prepared to take on the responsibility of helping solve the Artsakh conflict within a peaceful framework. She spoke about that with the Armenian prime minister.

The chancellor said that she followed the political changes in Armenia, “the Velvet Revolution, as it is referred to.”

She also said that she is happy to be in Armenia, not just at the time of the hundredth anniversary celebrations of the first republic, but also at the time of great political changes in the country.

Angela Merkel also went to the Tsitsernakaberd memorial during her visit. She said, “We recognize the horrible event that took place against the Armenian people in 1915. That must not be forgotten.”
