“I consider such an announcement to be diplomatic. I think it’s more of an allusion to the fact that Belarus will be the one taking on the responsibility of leading the CSTO, Lukashenko says that it doesn’t matter to him who the Secretary-General will be,” Advisor to the President of Armenia, political scientist, and former member of parliament Tevan Poghosyan said during an interview regarding President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko’s announcement that he had nominated other candidates for Secretary-General besides Yuri Khachaturov, but the other countries didn’t listen to him.
The Republic of Armenia has recently begun the process of replacing Yuri Khachaturov as the Secretary-General of the CSTO since he has been accused of violating the constitutional system during the events of March 1st.
“It seems that Lukashenko wants to tell Armenia with this announcement that if we want to fire Khachaturov, we can do it, but what can any of the other countries do? They’ll wait a year and a half and then they’ll nominate their candidate. It seems that all members of the CSTO voted in favor of Khachaturov at the time besides Lukashenko. He is now also honestly voicing his opinion.”
According to Tevan Poghosyan, it seems that Belarus might not agree with the new candidate Armenia will nominate soon. “Armenia needs to understand what kind of diplomacy needs to be used in order to put its priorities at the forefront in the CSTO.”
