August 29,2018 20:39

Armenian specialists have created a unique platform

The Armenian team of experts have created Tutor Platform, which includes the Course Finder – a language school search engine, Tutor LMS – learning management system, and Tutor Bot – a language learning tool.

Tutor Course Finder search engine allows to choose a foreign language course amongst more than 100 language schools with different ratings. The choice can be made by school’s location and the cost of the training. The co-founder of the project Aram Karapetyan tells “Aravot”: “To develop Tutor Course Finder, we found out which language centers in Armenia there were, took all the information and collected it in one place so that the student could make the decision easier. We have been working more actively since May. About ten schools have already shown interest and sent their information. We have set the goal not only to solve the problem of language learning, but also to understand why people need to learn a new language in general and direct them correctly.”

When entering Tutor Course Finder, you can make a choice between the highly rated and low cost schools. As for the school ratings, the co-founder of the project says that there are hundred schools in Yerevan and orienting amongst these schools is time-consuming. Thanks to Course Finder, the school – choice time will be reduced significantly. At this moment, the rating objectivity question is solved through comments. Not only learners, but also language schools benefit from the search engine. Course Finder aims not only at learners, but also language schools. Schools can represent all the courses, events and perks they provide and reach out more students. “Briefly, through Course Finder a learner chooses a course, sends the school a request to join this course. Then the school adds this course to the Tutor learning management system and starts running and managing it”: remarks Aram Karapetyan.

Tutor learning management system or LMS is a platform where teachers can manage all their groups and classes. This system attacks two aspects of teacher daily routine: once it reduces and automates mechanically redundant paperwork. Secondly, and most importantly, it gives tools to teachers for creating, adjusting, monitoring and individualising the learning process. The co-founder of the project assures that they work closely with teachers in order to understand their needs from inside out. They just don’t automate teacher’s work but help them get rid of a burden of routine and focus on research and creative teaching.

Aram Karapetyan mentions that Tutor Bot is the root of Tutor platform from which everything started. It is a language learning tool teaching English and German. In the near future, the language palette will be expanded with Spanish. With Tutor, students can combine their offline and online classes. After assessing student’s language proficiency, Tutor suggests choosing the textbook which students learn with their “real” teacher with. Taking the textbook as a basis, Tutor Bot builds the whole training on a dynamic content coming from the world literature. This means, students are relieved from seeing the same sentences over and over. The team now also develops games that make training more interactive and attractive. “We make the learning material dynamic and provide a great deal of data analysis. By average statistics, teacher spends five to ten minutes on each student, which is quite little. Meanwhile, everything in this platform is structured so that the learners can see their mistakes while doing the homework in the app and receive an instant feedback. The teacher tracks then student’s progress on Tutor LMS and adjusts the training correspondingly “says Tutor’s co-founder.

The team is technologically quite ahead while doing the initial knowledge assessment and study material processing. Besides, Tutor Bot tailors the training based on student learning style and personality type.

Aram Karapetyan also tells how the idea of creating an app was born. “After moving to Germany, I had to study German. And since I am a “technical” person, I began to look for logic in the language learning process. I created the basic tool and started learning by myself. Then I decided to summarize the results and thought of creating a something so that people who do not have the means to participate in the courses may somehow improve their English and German. By developing a language learning tool, we also want to understand what kind of person we are dealing with, what methods of learning will be more effective for her, what content, sentences, texts to choose.”

Tutor platform runs also a blog which tells us about the importance, types and methods of language learning. This is somehow a guide for everybody who wants to jump into the new language world.

Aram Karapetyan notes that the main goal is to create an ultimate system for language acquisition which will reduce costs and improve efficiency. He informs that they are in touch with the Deputy Minister of Education, as well as many organizations like Children of Armenia Fund (COAF), Teach for Armenia, etc.

During our conversation we reach out also the payment-question. “Schools pay two dollars for each active student per month, and for the European market it is five euros. Students and teachers themselves do not pay anything. In the next two months, we are going to work with about twenty schools.”: says Aram Karapetyan.

At the end of our conversation, the co-founder of Tutor platform emphasizes that their main goal is to make language learning affordable to everyone. Thanks to an easy manageable system they’ve built, all the parties of language learning, i.e. language schools, teachers and learners get what they want: schools increase their efficiency and gain more students, teachers receive tools to manage their classes effortlessly, learners get an interactive tool to learn new languages, get feedback on their progress.
