Leader of the Republican Party faction in parliament Vahram Baghdasaryan spoke in an interview with reporters about second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan’s interview for NTV. Kocharyan criticized Serzh Sargsyan for making changes to the constitution, saying that if Serzh hadn’t changed the constitution to allow him to be in office for a third term, there wouldn’t have been a revolution.
Vahram Baghdasaryan said, “It’s possible that constitutional changes could have been a reason, but I think that it was unavoidable in any circumstance.”
Regarding the constitutional changes, Vahram Baghdasaryan said that the changes to the system of government were being demanded by political forces in the past. They thought it was too early, but then political advancements were made. They tried to go from being a majority to being a consensus so that Armenia could become a parliamentary republic. “From a political perspective, I think that the political arena was too mature to make that change.”
