The third round of the “Grand Chess Tour” in St. Louis, where the top ten chess grandmasters competed, finished with the Sinquefield Cup competitions. Levon Aronian, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, and American Fabiano Caruana won 5.5 points out of 9 possible points and won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. But it became clear that it was impossible to decide who won which place because they all had the same results in the last two rounds.
According to the rules of the Sinquefield Cup, there needed to be a tiebreaker round between the three grandmasters to decide their order. Another tiebreaker needed to happen in order to see who would be traveling to London for the final round. A deadlock took place, and finally the organizers and grandmasters solved the issue through negotiations. They decided that there would be no tiebreaker to decide who the sole winner of the Sinquefield Cup is. All three of them- Levon Aronian, Fabiano Caruana, and Magnus Carlsen- were announced as the winners. But there will be a tiebreaker between Fabiano Caruana and fellow American Wesley So, who were both in 4th place in the overall competitions, to see who will be the fourth participant in the London “Grand Tour” championships.
