On 15 September, the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv will host a large clean up event on Dnieper river bank. The event will mark International Clean Beach Day, which will be taking place globally on that day.
Environmental activists, local youth and adults will clean part of the Dnieper river bank as part of the initiative of the country’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the EU-funded “European Union Water Initiative plus for Eastern Partnership” (EUWI+) project.
All participants will receive bags, gloves and special neckerchiefs. Recyclable waste, such as plastic and glass bottles, will be collected separately.
During the event, the participants will observe a water tractor collecting waste from the river.
The EUWI+ project, together with its Ukrainian partners, recently announced the launch of a social media challenge, “I cleaned – Your turn!”, to draw attention to and encourage action in the cleaning and protection of banks and beaches. Anyone who accepted the challenge became part of a worldwide campaign in support of cleaning of banks and beaches. Enthusiastic volunteers cleaned beaches in their areas, posting photos on Facebook and inviting others to participate.
The project and its Ukrainian partners have also developed a motivational cartoon for the topic.
