‘We don’t have preconditions’: MFA regarding why Pashinyan-Aliyev meeting will not take place

September 26,2018 16:38

A meeting between the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Armenia and Azerbaijan will take place, organized by the co-leaders of the OSCE Minsk group. The results of the meeting will be published when the meeting is over, Spokesperson of the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Tigran Balayan said to reporters. According to him, until the end of the week, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, will have several meetings and speeches during the UN Grand Assembly sessions.

Regarding the possible Pashinyan-Aliyev meeting, Tigran Balayan first emphasized that the meeting cannot be self-serving. “As far as content goes, foundations for agreements need to be made, however, Azerbaijan bans agreements that there needs to be an increase in observers at the border and that trust mechanisms need to be put into place. These issues will be discussed during the Mnatsakanyan-Mamedyarov meeting.”

Balayan, responding to the reporters’ observation that the Armenian side is putting preconditions on Azerbaijan before the meeting, said, “Armenia does not have any preconditions. We are prepared to meet- the prime minister has said that multiple times- but again, this meeting will not be an opportunity to take pictures. It needs to have a lot of content and it needs to produce results regarding carrying out these agreements.”
