‘Ilham Aliyev and I agreed to carry out special steps to decrease tensions at the Line of Contact’: Nikol Pashinyan

September 30,2018 16:41

“Ilham Aliyev and I agreed to give an order to our defense ministers to carry out special steps to decrease tensions at the Line of Contact and overall. I am referring specifically to taking steps to prevent incidents at the border,” Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a Facebook live stream regarding the agreements he made in Dushanbe with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Nikol Pashinyan said that this was his first meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev where they discussed the subject. He explained, “We knew each other, but after that, there was no meeting or conversation. We didn’t even speak about such things when we were introduced to each other. This time, we were able to speak about the subject, and as a result, we recorded several important points.”

The prime minister assured that an agreement was made with the Azerbaijani president to carry out steps in order to prevent violations of the ceasefire along the Armenia-Azerbaijan and Artsakh-Azerbaijan borders. “I gave an order to our armed forces and I am happy to state that last night was the most peaceful night since I was elected Prime Minister.”

He also said that he and Aliyev agreed that the Artsakh conflict needs to be solved through negotiations. “We agreed to create some sort of operative communication system. Now, we have an agreement, but we have not decided whether or not that communication will be only through technology. We have simply agreed that we will order our respective offices to create an operative connection system. If we want to keep the ceasefire regime, then we need to have some sort of operative communication.”
