The Turkish Constitutional Court determined that the state needs to pay 27,000 Turkish lira in compensation to famous Turkish historian, professor, and one of the leaders of the 2008 “Armenians, forgive us” movement Baskin Oran.
In 2008, Baskin Oran, as a member of the government’s human rights committee, prepared a discussion about the rights of cultural minorities. This discussion became the subject of harsh criticism from nationalists, and as a result, Baskin Oran became a target.
The “Turkish Revenge Brigade” especially threatened Oran, and the government did not pay any attention to it. Despite the fact that the author of threatening messages sent to him was revealed, the court process stopped for unknown reasons and the person wasn’t punished.
Baskin Oran’s lawyer, Oya Aydin Goktas, appealed to the constitutional court of Turkey, where he also wrote about how threats aimed towards Hrant Dink were also ignored by the government and Hrant Dink was killed as a result.
Therefore, the constitutional court found the appeal to be sufficient and demanded the government to pay 27,000 Turkish lira in compensation to Baskin Oran for putting his life in danger and for violating his right to freedom of speech.
