October 11,2018 15:03

On 17 October, the Armenian capital of Yerevan will host a discussion on the situation of the country’s water sector. Supported by the European Union Water Initiative Plus for the Eastern Partnership (EUWI+ East) project, the meeting aims to provide updates on the status of the development of a roadmap for implementing five water directives in Armenia under the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

The meeting will also be an opportunity to discuss progress and next steps in implementing the EUWI+ East programme in Armenia and to receive feedback from national stakeholders. The event will also serve as a platform for coordinating donor activities in the water sector in Armenia.

The EUWI+ East project helps Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to bring their legislation closer to EU policy in the field of water management, with a main focus on the management of trans-boundary river basins. It supports the development and implementation of pilot river basin management plans, building on the improved policy framework and ensuring a strong participation of local stakeholders.

With a total budget of €24.8 million, the project spans the five-year period from 2016 to 2020, aiming to improve the management of water resources, in particular trans-boundary rivers, developing tools to improve the quality and availability of water in the long term.
