Yesterday, at the Presidential Palace President Armen Sarkissian met with the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau who is in Armenia on official visit. Present at the meeting were also delegations of the two countries.
President Sarkissian welcomed the Prime Minister of Canada to Yerevan – the capital of Armenia and current capital of Francophonie.
“Our people know very well your family. Canada is a dear country for Armenia. We have always been appreciative of the warm attitude of the Canadian people and the government of Canada towards the Armenians in need. Armenians will never forget that you personally welcomed our compatriots from Syria.
These are not just nice words; these are the words of great appreciation.
We undoubtedly also highly value things that your father had done. The time you visited Armenia was right after the earthquake, and the country was on the eve of becoming independent. But it was also the period when the Karabakh movement had started and which became a movement for the country’s independence.”
Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau in his turn noted, “I am glad to be back to Armenia. It is pleasing to speak about friendship existing between Canada and Armenia, which also has a good history but even a greater potential.” According to the Prime Minister of Canada, Armenia is going through a wonderful political period which leads towards a more practical, deeper democracy, greater economic opportunities. He highly praised the input of 60 thousand citizens of the Armenian descent in the Canadian success story. It is also a brilliant example of accepting people from all over the world also in our times when his country has accepted Syrian refugees.
The Prime Minister of Canada expressed hope that Armenia and Canada together will be able to build a stronger future and noted that Armenians are unique and regardless of where in the world they are, they preserve their national identity, language, and culture.
The parties concurred that the two countries can successfully cooperate in the areas of education and information technologies.
