A statue of the great Ukrainian Taras Shevchenko was unveiled in Yerevan’s Circular Park. The sculpting of the statue was funded by Gagik Tsarukyan. Gagik Tsarukyan, members of the Armenian parliament, high-ranking officials from Ukraine, workers from the Ukrainian embassy in Armenia, and representatives of the Armenian community in Ukraine were present.
The statue was unveiled by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Armenia, Peter Litvin, head of the Prosperous Armenian political party Gagik Tsarukyan, and the president of the Yerevan Branch of Ternopil National Economic University, Sahak Gudratyann.
The statue was opened in honor of the 27th anniversary of Ukrainian independence and in honor of the 100th anniversary of relations between the first Republic of Armenia and the Democratic Republic of Ukraine.
This is the only statue of Taras Shevchenko in the South Caucasus region. It will play a huge role in strengthening Armenian-Ukrainian political, cultural, and economic relations.
Gagik Tsarukyan said in his speech, “Today, we gather in the heart of Yerevan to celebrate the unveiling of the statue of great Ukrainian poet, artist, painter, and genealogist Taras Shevchenko. I funded the sculpting of this statue in honor of the half million Armenians living in Ukraine. Our compatriots, who have been living in Ukraine for many years, think of Ukraine as their second homeland. Ukrainians living in Armenia also think of Armenia as their second homeland. It’s my wish for that connection to grow stronger and deeper.”
