Turkish-Armenian photojournalist Ara Guler died at the age of 90 in a hospital in Istanbul. He died of heart failure in the late evening of October 17th.
Ara Guler was a world-famous Turkish-Armenian photojournalist. He was born into an Armenian family in Istanbul on August 16th, 1928. He was frequently referred to as the “Eye of Istanbul” or the “Photographer of Istanbul.”
Starting in the 1960s, his photographs graced the covers of books and were presented in several exhibitions worldwide. He interviewed and photographed famous individuals in the 1970s, including Winston Churchill, Maria Callas, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, and others. His home in Istanbul became a house-museum, and the “Ara” cafe on the first floor is a prominent spot for artists to gather.
