“I don’t want to predict… Armenia supports the Minsk group’s framework, and that is something I am happy about,” National Security Advisor of the USA John Bolton, who is in Yerevan for the first time on an official visit, told reporters in regard to the question of what documents are placed on the negotiations table for the Artsakh conflict. Former American co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group Richard Hoagland said that the documents on the negotiations table are no longer the “Madrid Principles,” but something else instead.
John Bolton did not give a clear answer to the question, but instead brought up former US Secretary of State James Baker’s belief about resolving the conflict. “He said that if one of the sides is pushing something forward, it’s not mandatory for that to be accepted.”
Regarding Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s announcement that Artsakh needs to return to the negotiations table, the American official did not give any evaluations, but instead said, “If the Prime Minister and his political party are elected in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Armenia, that is a wonderful opportunity for the Prime Minister to initiate decisive moves in the Artsakh resolution process. We, as one of the co-chairs, will do our best to make sure that Azerbaijan responds to that.”
