Ambassador of the European Union to Armenia Piotr Switalski stated, “You need to amend the constitution.” He spoke about this during the “Importance of Snap Elections in Armenia in the Context of Armenia-EU relations” two-day seminar from November 2nd until November 4th.
According to Switalski, despite that fact that both he and Brussels somewhat supported the Armenian government’s decision regarding becoming a parliamentary republic, “We thought that it would be better for Armenia to become a parliamentary republic. But now I think that the constitution was made for one person only.”
In the ambassador’s opinion, the government is focused on the constitution. “The constitution gives huge levers to the prime minister, and the president is simply a wedding general.”
Switalski, referring to the other problems in the constitution, also spoke about the protection of internal forces. “There is no internal affairs ministry in Armenia. There are several other countries like that in the world, but they are mostly dictatorships.”
