“The situation surrounding Iran is a worrying one. I think that the US will continue to pressure Armenia so that our relations with Iran will deteriorate. The United States has made that decision, but whether that’s fair or not is another question. The EU, for example, does not share America’s approach. This means that the USA has made that decision separately,” said head of the Armenian Cause Office, one of the leaders of the ARF Dashnaktsutiun, and politician Giro Manoyan regarding America’s new sanctions against Iran.
According to him, Armenia cannot make the USA happy and continue to have relations with Iran at the same time. “The Armenian community in the USA has an important role and it needs to explain to the government that Armenia has no other choice in the region. We will continue our economic relations with Iran. It’s clear that Armenia has always worked in foreign policy to not do anything against anyone. This approach should satisfy the US. This is a difficult situation, therefore we need to strengthen our economic ties with Iran, and explain the situation to the US. The American president needs to understand that Armenian-Iranian relations are not aimed against US interests.”
Regarding Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s announcement that the Armenian-Iranian border may close, Giro Manoyan said that he does not understand such a decision. “I don’t think that that’s possible while we have relations with Iran.”
