‘Civil Contract will have issues nominating strong candidates’: Armen Baghdasaryan

November 09,2018 20:46

Political analyst Armen Baghdasaryan said that holding elections in accordance with the old Electoral Code will present several difficulties for the Civil Contract party.

“The political party will have issues nominating strong candidates under the rating system. Perhaps it will even be forced to nominate the kinds of candidates who would have never been nominated in other circumstances,” Baghdasaryan said.

Lawyer Zaruhi Hovhannisyan noted that changing the Electoral Code was one of the most important issues that was rejected. According it her, it’s important that the values that the revolution held and that affected the people are brought up during these elections so that it can balance out the things that they were unable to carry out. “The Electoral Code sought to increase the quota for female candidates. We lost that one tool for democracy here, which would have allowed us to move forward in gender equality.”

Political analyst Armen Vardanyan said that the political parties that have strong rating candidates will win the elections. If the Electoral Code had changed, political parties that would not have had strong candidates in the regions but that would have had good ballots could have won the preliminary phase.

“Some parties will use criminal services to support certain candidates or to ensure votes within the confines of this electoral system. Criminals and mafiosos will have their influence on these elections.”
