The Committee to Protect Journalists is pleased to announce that Gulnoza Said has been named CPJ’s Europe and Central Asia program coordinator. Said will lead efforts to report, monitor, and advocate on press freedom issues in Europe and Central Asia.
“Gulnoza has already played an invaluable role in CPJ’s advocacy and research in Europe and Central Asia,” said CPJ Program Director Carlos Martinez de la Serna. “We look forward to meeting challenges in the region head-on as Europe faces a worsening climate for press freedom and countries like Turkey continue to top the list of nations with the most journalists behind bars.”
Said had served as CPJ’s Europe and Central Asia researcher since September 2016. She has over 15 years of experience as a journalist and communications professional in New York, Prague, Bratislava, and Tashkent. She has covered issues including politics, media, religion, and human rights with a focus on Central Asia, Russia, and Turkey.
CPJ was recently part of an international delegation that visited Malta to meet with government officials, including Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, to mark the one-year anniversary of the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. CPJ also publishes a weekly blog, the Turkey Crackdown Chronicle detailing ongoing threats to press freedom in Turkey.
