“Some of the things that people are currently speaking about, such as giving up land in exchange for peace, is unacceptable for us. The foundation of the Artsakh conflict resolution is getting rid of problems, and in order for that to happen, Azerbaijan needs to first recognize Artsakh’s right to self-determination. It needs to understand that the people of Artsakh will decide upon their fate through a referendum,” RPA Spokesperson Eduard Sharmazanov told reporters.
According to him, if the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group or high-ranking US officials make implications about the “giving up land in exchange for peace” approach, it needs to be taken into consideration that that is unacceptable for the Armenian side. Regarding the statement made by the secretary of the Security Council of Artsakh Vitaly Balasanyan, that Armenia and Artsakh will establish a military-political alliance, Sharmazanov said, “There were discussions about having such an alliance after the April War. We have serious worries and we foresee challenges, not only in national security but also in the Artsakh conflict.”
Sharmazanov assured that the RPA will be participating in the upcoming snap parliamentary elections on December 9th with the plan that there will not be any one-sided compromises in the Artsakh conflict resolution process. “We do not intend to say that the interim government is anti-Armenian and intends to make concessions. No, we don’t dabble in cheap populism. We simply want to say that there are challenges. The RPA will do everything with its experience and connections to not allow unwanted developments in the Artsakh conflict.”
