The head of the Investigative Committee in the National Assembly, deputy of the RPA faction, and former General Prosecutor of the Republic of Armenia Gevorg Kostanyan said that there are issues in upholding the minimum number of members in the committee necessary, which is why a session has not been held regarding the conversation between the heads of the NSS and SIS that was secretly recorded. “At least six people need to be present, but the ten members of the committee are involved with the election process, and therefore it is impossible for them to participate in the session,” Gevorg Kostanyan told reporters regarding the activities of the committee.
He stated that the fact that a conversation between the NSS and SIS leaders was secretly recorded is a matter of national security and finding out who was responsible should not be based on political comfort. “I trust that a new investigative committee will be formed in the new parliament so that the foundations of such problems can be studied. This issue is also in regard to those who try and interfere with the independence of the courts. Therefore, the forces in the new National Assembly will be interested to know whether there are foundations to prove that the freedom of judges has been interfered with.”
Regarding previous conclusions made about the secret conversations, Gevorg Kostanyan said, “We have not been able to obtain sufficient amounts of information and facts, therefore work needs to continue. I can only say that it is worrisome that the heads of the NSS and SIS can be recorded. It means that anyone can be recorded.”
