The New Website Presents Stories from the 1988 Armenian Earthquake and Beyond

For the 30th anniversary of the 1988 Armenian earthquake, a group of Peace Corps Volunteers together with Armenian volunteers have initiated a project called Story Beyond the Ruins. The American volunteers together with Armenians have created a website (storybeyondtheruins.com) where you can find personal stories from the survivors of the earthquake.  These people share about how the tragedy affected their lives and about their hopes for the future.

In the website, the visitors can listen to edited audio recordings from the interviews and read summaries. Most of the interviews are done in English but the entire website is translated into Armenian, including summaries for each story.  The website also features photo galleries, a page about Armenian history, and information about how people can support or get involved with the project.

The project aims to preserve personal stories and memories of that event. The creators hope that Story Beyond the Ruins can be a long-term project and will engage more Armenian volunteers to help with interviewing, editing, translating and web design in the future.
