People with criminal record not accepted to work in Armenia: monitoring

December 14,2018 17:11

The Human Rights Defender’s office carried out monitoring activities at the Ministry of Justice Probation state service and recorded several problems. Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan said that, according to the results, probation workers do not have proper working conditions. For example, several regional offices work in other structures’ buildings. There have even been cases of probation officers who confessed that they do not have enough chairs, and they themselves purchase other office supplies.

The other problem, according to the monitoring results, is providing people who have been sentenced with work. “Probation officers claim that during the first meeting with detainees, they clarify their needs, and then send them to the activities center, and then the Labor and Social Affairs Ministry deems them unfit to work. Employers, upon finding out that these individuals have a criminal record, refuse to accept them into work.”

Arman Tatoyan also said that he has already spoken about these problems with the Minister of Justice.
