Ararat Mirzoyan on becoming National Assembly Speaker: ‘I realize this is heavy work, but the load on first Deputy Prime Minister was not light either’

December 20,2018 17:36

After the first session of the My Step alliance, Ararat Mirzoyan told reporters that the decision to make him be the candidate for Speaker of the National Assembly was not made yet due to the fact that the position of first Deputy Prime Minister will be cut. He said that he wanted to go from being in the executive body to being in the legislative body.

“I realize that there will be a lot of heavy work, but the load on the first Deputy Prime Minister was not light either,” he said.

Reporters commented on the fact that he will be in charge of a parliament that does not have an opposition, according to criticisms. There is a ruling party, and two other forces, which will be constrained to criticising and being rooted. Mirzoyan was asked how he feels about the fact that some of his party members expressed the opinion that the opposition will rise out of the My Step alliance.

“I do not agree with the view that there is no opposition. I do not agree with the opinion that there is an opposition de jure, but it will feel constrained to criticize the government. And I also do not agree with the view that the opposition will rise out of the My Step alliance. If this thought also is referring to the My Step alliance not making different decisions at once, but instead there will be large internal discussions, then yes, there will be decisions made based on discussions,” Ararat Mirzoyan said.
