“I like to joke that the revolution at the Byurakan Observatory took place one year before the revolution in Armenia. Starting in the spring of 2017, we made major financial changes under serious guardianship. It became clear that we can do a lot more despite our pitiful financial state. If money is spent more purposefully, we can do more things such as deeper studies of the universe,” head of the Byurakan Observatory Areg Mikayelyan told reporters.
According to Areg Mikayelyan, the observatory is a national treasure and a regional center, which is very important politically. “I must present this briefly to our new leaders, and state that this is a very serious argument for Armenia’s international authority. This is the only sector where Armenia has become known as an international center. The region is considered to comprise of Southwest and Central Asia. So, from Eastern Europe to Central Asia, Armenia is considered to be an astronomy center.”
