Naira Zohrabyan remembers how Bright Armenia and Yelq actively fought for Armenia to leave Eurasian Economic Union

January 11,2019 16:37

Deputy from the Prosperous Armenia political party Naira Zohrabyan is surprised by publications in the media, which state that Prosperous Armenia is copying Bright Armenia’s initiative regarding a committee for the Eurasian Economic Union and regional issues, and that it wishes to lead that committee.

“We all remember well how Bright Armenia and the Yelq alliance actively fought against the EAEU. Even more, one of Yelq’s main campaign points was to bring Armenia out of the EAEU. In the last parliament, Yelq drafted a bill for Armenia to leave the organization and they actively spoke about this during sessions of the International Relations Committee,” Naira Zohrabyan told Aravot.

She does not understand why Bright Armenia has come up with this initiative and why it wishes to lead a committee on the EAEU and regional affairs.

Regarding Prosperous Armenia and its expectations, Naira Zohrabyan said, “Prosperous Armenia signed an agreement with the Russian ruling party, United Russia, back in 2009. Collaborations with the EAEU and Russia have been one of the key points of all Prosperous Armenia campaigns with regards to foreign relations. Therefore, it is understandable as to why we seek to lead a committee for EAEU and regional affairs.”

She also considers it to be a good thing that the formerly pro-Western leaders of the alliances upheld Armenia’s traditional stances on foreign affairs, since she believes Armenia needs to continue to have balanced relations with the European Union and Russia.
