Kocharyan’s lawyers ask SIS to drop criminal prosecution

January 11,2019 20:07

The lawyers representing Armenia’s second President Robert Kocharyan in the criminal case alleging his complicity in 2008 post-election events, have filed a motion to the Special Investigative Service (SIS) asking it to drop the criminal prosecution against their client.

In a statement released on Friday, the lawyers say they filed the petition on 9 January, arguing Article 300.1 of the Criminal Code (overthrowing the constitutional order) is not applicable for the ex-president.

The defense team also added they will regularly update the public on the content of the complaints and motions they have filed or plan to file and the responses they get so long as they don’t contain confidentiality.

Kocharyan is in custody since December 7, 2018, pending trial. He is charged with overthrowing Armenia’s constitutional order during the March 1-2, 2008 post-election events in Yerevan.

Kocharyan and his lawyers strongly deny the charges as ‘politically motivated’.
