Movie director Tigran Khzmalyan, members of the Armenian European political party, President of the National Press Club Narine Mkrtchyan, and a group of regular citizens held a candlelight procession during protests in Gyumri in honor of the memory of the murdered Avetisyan family and Julieta Ghukasyan.
“Russian Army, get out of Armenia!” read some of the posters that protesters carried.
“We are not making any political announcements, because today is the 4th anniversary of the brutal slaughter of the Avetisyan family. This is not a political protest. We simply have a humanitarian, pure desire for something to be done. For the first time since February of 1921, protests are taking place in Armenia against the invasion of the Red Army. Murderers, invaders, and occupiers cannot protect a nation. Only the Armenian army can protect Armenians, only Armenian soldiers are the guarantee for our peace, our independence, and our freedom. Let’s not lie to ourselves. Our country has been invaded and we are now standing next to one of the positions of those invaders. This is a military position of violence and invaders in Armenia, which wants to be independent, and it wants to be tied to the civilized world through the economic, political, and humanitarian sectors,” Tigran Khzmalyan said.
“As an Armenian citizen, I demand that the Russian soldier who killed Julieta Ghukasyan be handed over to Armenian authorities. Serious doubts remain from Permyakov’s sentencing. I do not want that to repeat,” Narine Mkrtchyan said.
