The court decided to prolong the time limit placed on second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan to be in detainment by two months. One of Robert Kocharyan’s lawyers, Aram Orbelyan, told reporters, “The fact that the court tried to unite two interferences shows an approach that refused to carry out justice, and one that refused to discuss the subject of bail. Therefore, after taking into consideration the pressure placed on the court, we cannot be optimistic.”
Aram Orbelyan confirmed that they will be appealing to the European Court of Human Rights, but their complaint will not be regarding arguments of Robert Kocharyan being a political prisoner.
He said that he has not yet been able to see the second President, but after visitation, either the lawyers or the former President’s office will issue a statement.
The court examined two interferences, one presented by the Special Investigative Committee, which sought to increase the length of time of Robert Kocharyan’s detainment, and the other, which was presented by Robert Kocharyan’s lawyers, which sought to change his method of deterrence by allowing him to be released on bail.
