January 21,2019 18:37

During the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), acting President Liliane Maury-Pasquier was re-elected President of the organization. She was the only candidate nominated for the position, and none of the PACE delegations voiced their objections.

Liliane Maury-Pasquier spoke about the Council of Europe members’ delegations, and about the financial issues the CoE faces. She announced, “The fact that one of the member states, the Russian Federation, is not represented in PACE, but participates in other activities of the Council of Europe, is ineffective and it has a negative impact on human rights defense in the region, as well as on the protection of democracy.”

At the beginning of the session, the Assembly held a moment of silence in honor of Gdansk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz, who was killed during a terrorist attack in Strasbourg. He was killed on January 13th.

The Assembly also discussed the snap parliamentary elections that took place in Armenia on December 9th.
