Responding to the question of whether or not the Madrid Principles are still on the table due to the fact that Nikol Pashinyan has announced that giving up territory in exchange for peace is unacceptable, international studies expert Suren Sargsyan said, “It is natural that that approach was not and will never be in Armenia’s or Artsakh’s best interests. That needs to stop being circulated. And even if it’s not, I trust that such negotiations, conversations, and discussions are not taking place.”
He said that negotiations are still only being held on the level of the countries’ foreign ministers, and not on the level of the countries’ leaders. “Whether or not the Madrid Principles will be in place… If you did not notice, some of the members of the new government have avoided the question of whether or not the Madrid Principles are still on the table. This is a very important question, since there is a new government in Armenia. This is an adaptation process. Zohrab Mnatsakanyan is at the frontline. There will likely be another meeting for negotiations in the near future. I also want to say that it will obviously be better for all of us for Zohrab to negotiate than it would be for Davit to go to war,” Suren Sargsyan said.
