The decision on which wrestlers to send to the Tokyo Olympics will be strict. There will be 16 wrestlers for each weight category. Olympic vouchers will be rallied off during the first world championships this year and during the next three tournaments. One of these tournaments will be the 2020 European tournament, which five countries have sent in requests to host. Azerbaijan is one of those five countries.
Aravot asked the head coach of the Armenian Greco-Roman wrestling national team, Levon Julfalakyan, about what steps the federation is initiating after taking into consideration the experiences of the past. “We already wrote a letter to the international federation, the UWW, demanding that they remove Baku as one of the possible cities to host the European tournaments, because Armenia will face problems regarding participation. We have also sent letters to several national federations in Europe, warning them that, if they have Armenian wrestlers on their teams, they will also face similar issues. We requested this so that they can initiate steps to take Baku off the list. There are several European teams which have Armenian athletes: Russia, France, Sweden, Bulgaria, Poland, the Netherlands, and more. Now it’s up to the UWW to decide. Only time will tell,” Levon Julfalakyan said.
