How to avoid labels

February 08,2019 13:22

I must confess that, as I grow older, I realize more and more that all of humanity has more similarities with one another than differences, and it is not right to constantly stress those differences. We need to accept our own flaws and the flaws of others without turning them into huge problems. We especially need to be calm and rational when we each have different understandings of different phenomena or events.

For example, in the summer of 2016, a group of armed people raided a police regiment and killed someone. Some Armenians considered this to be act of heroism. I do not agree. So now what? I do not need to call those people supporters of violence, and they do not need to call me a servant of the former authorities. We do not have this doom between us. I do not consider this difference to be a fateful one.

On the other hand, I do not dramatize labels, insults, and pathos. If someone feels better after writing those things, then so be it.

Or, the leaders of Armenia each had different opinions of how the Artsakh conflict can be resolved. I (or other Armenians) agree with some of their views, and I disagree with other views. But I do not wish to label any of the leaders or the people who agree or disagree with them as traitors. And again: if there are people who enjoy calling others “losers,” “Vasak Syuni,” or accuse others of wanting to give up land, then why should we deprive them of that pleasure? Those historical excursions can have only one negative consequence- they will cause tensions between the authorities of Armenia and Artsakh. And I do not need to mention whom that will benefit.

I think that there are methodic inaccuracies at the base of these labels, arguments, and “fights.” We approach different people, events, and phenomena with prepared thoughts, and put all of these instances into different boxes. The average person lacks a direct, creative, and unbiased outlook.

Let me give another example. Many people from my generation are critical of the new National Assembly. I have already been able to meet most of the new deputies (through giving interviews). My impressions are mostly positive. We must look for the positive in everything. Especially in the youth.
