Aghasi Yenokyan regarding Sargsyan-Aliyev, Pashinyan-Aliyev negotiations: ‘They are speaking about Russian peacekeepers again’

February 11,2019 13:45

Political analyst Aghasi Yenokyan, referring to the meetings between Pashinyan and Aliyev and the attitudes circulating that the Armenian authorities are preparing to give up territory, pondered what the territories would be in exchange for; security? Peace? “We will have the highest guarantee of security when Nagorno-Karabakh is recognized internationally.”

Aravot reminded Yenokyan of how Serzh Sargsyan went to Artsakh with the demand to give up land, not Nikol Pashinyan, and as Samvel Babayan claimed, when Serzh Sargsyan went to Artsakh for negotiations on giving up land in accordance with the Kazan documents, “It was not a usual meeting. It was a clear demand: either war or this agreement.”

Aghasi Yenokyan said that he does not wish to comment on Samvel Babayan’s announcement, but regarding the negotiations, he noted, “Negotiations are a marketing practice. Everyone needs to give what they have and take what they need. Now Armenia has land that Azerbaijan wants. Azerbaijan does not want anything else. But we want security, because our land serves as our security today. If we give that up, we need to have even higher guarantors of peace, including international recognition and peacekeeping troops.”

When asked what changes and options there are in the negotiations process today, Yenokyan said, “If the Russian side is active in Pashinyan’s negotiations, and Armenia frequently consults with Russia, I think that they are speaking again about Russian peacekeepers. I don’t think that this is about international peacekeepers.”
