‘Nikol Pashinyan cannot be a reporter anymore… Can he be an impartial reporter?’: Samvel Martirosyan

February 17,2019 13:14

“More professional journalists are not encouraged to voice their opinions, even on social media. If a BBC reporter likes a post by someone who is the equivalent of their Pashinyan or Ashotyan, they’ll be fired. And if they “love” the post, they might get beaten up,” information security expert Samvel Martirosyan said during a discussion on problems in Armenia after the revolution.

The discussion was organized by the “Media Defense” initiative and the Armenian Journalists Union.

Political analyst Aghasi Yenokyan spoke about how journalists are becoming parliament deputies. Samvel Martirosyan does not think there is anything bad about that. “But if they return to being a journalist after their time as a deputy or political party member… If you are a journalist, your duty is to remain unbiased in your views. Nikol Pashinyan cannot be a reporter anymore. If someone has clear political views, can they truly be an impartial reporter? He can write editorials, but he cannot be a journalist.”
