‘Azerbaijan is preparing for a serious war in which Artsakh is only an excuse’: Ara Papian

February 22,2019 18:08

“The authorities are not presenting a clear position on whether there will be any territorial compromises within the framework of the Artsakh conflict resolution. The only position they presented is that the “land in exchange for peace” formula is impossible, but we already knew this. The Civil Contract has not presented its position on this whatsoever. So, since the possibility of territory being compromised has not been excluded, people are voicing their worries,” political analyst and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia Ara Papian told Aravot.

Regarding the question of whether the relative peace at the border is proof of Azerbaijan preparing for peace (during a meeting between the foreign affairs ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan in January, calls were made to prepare the people for peace), Ara Papian emphasized, “No steps towards peace are being taken by Azerbaijan. Just the opposite. Azerbaijan is opening military factories and is making new purchases in military technology. It is obvious that Azerbaijan is not preparing for peace. Even more, Azerbaijan announced a month ago that its military goal is to occupy Yerevan. What else do we need in order to understand that Azerbaijan is preparing for war where its goal isn’t Artsakh, but instead to destroy Armenia? We need to clearly understand that Artsakh is simply an excuse.”

First, I totally support Armenia and Artsakh.
I believe that Armenian authorities have long agreed PRIVATELY to give back SOME land to Azerbaijan as a “compromise” in return for recognition of the independence of Artsakh.
Again, give back some land, not all land. A little land, not a lot of land.
Yes, I understand that PUBLICLY this is not the Armenian (ROA and Artsakh) position and that it is a maximal negotiating position.
But I would like to know what is going on behind the scenes.
There have been HUNDREDS of various meetings between Armenians, Azeris, and the OSCE Minsk group.
What are they negotiating besides line-of-contact issues?
Do they sit there and just stare at each other?
They must be negotiating about SOMETHING, otherwise what is the use of these meetings?
Insights — real ones – are welcome.
