“We have our interests and benefits in Syria through our stable Armenian community, which has largely suffered due to the Syrian crisis. The fact that a humanitarian mission was sent to Syria with Russian support is logical. Who else was supposed to support it, if the only coalition recognized by the Syrian government is the Russian one, not the American one?” expert on Turkish studies Anush Hovhannisyan said during a press conference regarding the Armenian mission sent to Syria.
She emphasized that the mission is not going to carry out military duties, but instead humanitarian duties. “I do not see a problem here. The problem is that we need to present the reason for us being in Syria to our colleagues in the West in such a way to show that we are not respecting pressure from any country.”
Anush Hovhannisyan believes that Armenia should have explained the situation to its colleagues prior to sending the humanitarian mission, but it was not carried out appropriately by the necessary bodies.
