The law drafted by the Bright Armenia political party regarding “Changes in the law on citizens that have not done the mandatory military service in accordance with the prescribed order” was accepted by 96 deputies in parliament. It says that the time frame for the law’s operation was postponed until March 1st of this year.
“Armenian citizens who have reached the age of 27 and who did not serve in the army can return to Armenia and be free from criminal liability through monetary payment. We typically assume that people ran away from the army, but there are many reasons for people to be in other countries,” Bright Armenia deputy Gevorg Gorgisyan said.
According to him, approximately 2,000 citizens were waiting for this initiative.
My Step faction deputy and former Road Police official Armen Khachatryan said that the law is temporarily being organized, but it will promote repatriation and will strengthen ties between Armenia and the Diaspora. “At the moment, 10,000 Armenians who have not served in the army are under investigation.”
The second vote regarding the acceptance of this draft will take place on March 6th.
