Tevan Poghosyan on Vienna meeting and Mehriban Aliyeva’s statement

April 05,2019 22:33

The head of the International Center for Human Development, Tevan Poghosyan, had no unique expectations for the Pashinyan-Aliyev meeting that took place on March 29th in Vienna.

Poghosyan also discussed the problem that Azerbaijan faces and why Azerbaijan made an alternative statement after the meeting, saying that everything has stayed the same in the negotiations process. According to him, Aliyev wishes to break Armenian unity, which is why Aliyev tried to use “special messages” after the meeting.

Tevan Poghosyan is convinced that, if the economy begins to develop in Armenia, there will be even more powerful tensions with Aliyev. He concluded that the problem is that Aliyev needs all of Artsakh without Armenians, and his long-term goal is to reach Yerevan and Zangezur. Time is needed for that. “If we understand this well, we need to take the agenda into our own hands and strengthen our own alternatives,” Poghosyan said.

Tevan Poghosyan has the same observations about Mehriban Aliyeva’s statement on returning Artsakh. “If our goal is to not give up anything, then we need to repopulate the area through long-term projects. We have been dealing with the Artsakh issue since 1918. We must understand what we will be passing on to future generations,” Poghosyan said, adding, “Anna Hakobyan’s suggestion is not a solution, but instead a promotion of peace. Mehriban Aliyeva tried to break this by saying that she believes peace means that the Azeri flag will fly over all cities and villages in Artsakh. If we don’t accept this peace, we need to understand that there are things that need to be changed in this initiative.”
