Azeri studies expert Taron Hovhannisyan spoke about the resolution of the Artsakh conflict and statements that have been made about it.
“The mutual statements made over the past week after the meeting between the Armenian Prime Minister and the Azeri President were very tense. What do they mean? Minister of Defense Davit Tonoyan’s statement about ‘new war, new lands’ in the US right after the meeting meant that Armenia will not attack or carry out aggressive operations, but if Azerbaijan threatens us, Armenia will carry out preventative actions. As a result, Azerbaijan will suffer greatly. This was a statement aimed towards Azerbaijan which was meant to say that this issue does not have a military solution. And if Azerbaijan seeks to go that route, there will be bad consequences for them. This was also aimed towards Armenian society to keep their spirits high and to show them that Azerbaijan cannot pressure us. It was also a message for the OSCE Minsk Group nations that this conflict only will have a peaceful resolution, and it is not only Azerbaijan that can use military rhetoric.”
