Head of the Bright Armenia political party Edmon Marukyan told reporters that a draft for a resolution was brought to PACE that discusses violations of the rights of sexual minorities and transgender people in the South Caucasus. “A significant part of that resolution talks about Armenia, which is a result of discussions that took place after what happened in parliament.”
He said that Armenia is now facing problems since the media has actively reported on this topic. “If this resolution is accepted, Armenia is one of the countries that is being condemned. On that same day, economic issues were also being discussed. Weren’t such issues more important for you to report about? I and Vladimir Vardanyan are members of the committee on discrimination, and we have to try to answer for what happened in Armenia.”
The resolution condemns the actions of three countries in the South Caucasus- Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan- and puts Armenia on a level equal to that of Azerbaijan. “I am warning you that Armenia is going to have problems. Before you say anything, think about it. This is a result of how people were standing in front of the parliament building and saying that transgender people need to be burned and beaten. Do you think you’re the only ones to know about that? No, the whole world is watching.”
