Torchlight procession in honor of Armenian Genocide victims

April 23,2019 23:07

The 104th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was commemorated in Armenia with a torchlight procession, which has been the tradition for the past 20 years. People marched from Freedom Square in Yerevan to the Tsitsernakaberd Armenian Genocide Memorial.

The Turkish flag was also burned by young members of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, as is the yearly tradition. Then, the torches were lit, and people began to march towards Tsitsernakaberd while playing drums and singing patriotic songs, chanting, “Mush, Van, Ardahan, these are our historical lands,” “Recognition,” and “Compensation.”

I can’t imagine how someone can accept burning Turkish flag. This doesn’t mean that I don’t remember or demand. Moreover, this doesn’t even mean that I accept Turkish people like our friends or something similar. This is not right! We should realize that by publicly burning the Turkish flag will not bring the victims back. So, why people do that? Our nation should understand many minor points before doing that. Many Turkish people, especially young generation accept what their ancestors had done but by burning their flag we kind of announce that it makes no sense for us and we continue to hate them. Of course, they are not guilty because they didn’t do that. They are guilty because they live with that without speaking up. Here, the factor of their government has a huge impact. Everyone knows that the Turkish government and the president by himself are not going to do something beneficial for this issue. But the point is that by burning the flag we don’t even contribute to some solution.
